A day in history: Arkansas’ first medical marijuana dispensary opens its doors

History was made this weekend in Arkansas. The first few batches of medical marijuana have now been sold in the state legally.

Doctor’s Orders RX in Hot Springs was cleared by the Alcoholic Beverage Control earlier this month to start selling medical marijuana.

The dispensary made its first sale Friday afternoon. After resolving software issues, the business officially opened its doors to the public Saturday.

“I’m excited because it’s finally here.”

The wait is finally over for Bailey Arnold. She drove four hours from Tontitown to be one of the dispensary’s first customers.

She joined hundreds of other patients for the grand opening.

“I use it for anxiety, PTSD, back pains and scoliosis,” she said.

Doctor’s Orders opens more than two years after voters approved a medical marijuana amendment to the states constitution.

Those with the dispensary say it’s one of four in its zone to be licensed and the first in the state to be given the full clearance by the ABC.

“Over 11,000 people have already signed up as a patient with a qualifying condition,” Bailey Moll, a spokesperson for the business said. “There are ailing people in Arkansas, and we believe this can help them.”

One of those patients is Gerald Wilmer.

He says he waited in line seven hours to be a part of history in the Natural State.

“It’s history in the making for me,” he said. “I wanted to be a part of it.”

As for Bailey, she says Arkansas is making strides one sale at a time.

“If you can get people off medication and do it naturally, I am all about it,” she said.

Doctor’s Orders RX was open until 7 p.m. Saturday, serving patients on a first come, first serve basis.

All patients are required to have their medical marijuana identification card in order to enter the store.

Down the street from Doctor’s Orders RX, Green Springs Medical in Hot Springs was given final approval from the ABC Friday.

That business plans to open Monday at 10 a.m.
